Climbing Mount Everest is an extraordinary achievement for any human being. Yet, many believe that a greater fortune lies in the opportunity to be in the presence of a noble soul like Enam Ul Haque. Such were the sentiments expressed by his companions and admirers.

On Saturday (23 August), a program titled “Celebrating an Indomitable Life” was held at the auditorium of the Bishwo Sahitya Kendra in Dhaka to mark the 80th birthday of renowned ornithologist and pioneer of introducing Bangladesh’s birds to the international arena, Enam Ul Haque.

In his welcome remarks, Professor Md. Anwarul Islam, retired faculty of the Department of Zoology at the University of Dhaka, said:
“Enam Ul Haque has been my teacher outside the classroom. From him, I have learned how to live with honesty, humility, and selflessness.”

Mofidul Hoque, trustee of the Liberation War Museum, noted:
“Enam Ul Haque has quietly shaped the lives of countless young people. His connection with the Liberation War Museum is also unique and worth celebrating.”

Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder of the Bishwo Sahitya Kendra, reminisced:
“The experience of traveling to the Sundarbans with Enam Ul Haque remains one of the most memorable treasures of my life. From him, I learned the value of perseverance toward a goal.”

Jalal Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission and former president of the Bird Club, remarked:
“In life, finding the touch of a philosopher’s stone is rare. For us, Enam Ul Haque is that philosopher’s stone.”

Shamanto Dipu, Secretary of the Bird Club, added: “He teaches people to love what lies beyond the ordinary gaze, and to embrace life with simplicity and beauty.”

Two-time Everest summiteer M.A. Muhit shared his thoughts: “Conquering Everest twice has been remarkable, but far greater is the privilege of knowing Enam Ul Haque.”

Other speakers included Nishat Majumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to summit Mount Everest; researcher Mofiz Imam Milon; and Dr. Obaidul Haque, faculty member of International Relations at the University of Dhaka.

Enam Ul Haque’s rare bird photographs have adorned Bangladesh’s postage stamps, first day covers, and postcards. To honor his birthday, a commemorative volume titled “Nisorgo Manob Enam Ul Haque” was unveiled, featuring 41 personal tributes.

At the end of the program, Enam Ul Haque expressed gratitude to all attendees and called upon everyone to spread love for nature and life. Adding to the evening’s charm was a special musical performance by Joler Gaan.
